Super-sized Census

The US Census counts everyone living in America every 10 years. This is used to determine how many Congressional representatives each state will be entitled to.

The 1870 Census goes way, way beyond this original purpose to document every aspect of the new Industrial Era. It includes a wealth of information on business.

  Meticulous Documentation
Virtually all the items listed in the table of contents for the new 'Wealth and Industry' section of the 1870 Census are new. Data is included on debt, livestock, manufacturing, mining, fishing, mills and occupations. A brand new 'Statistical Atlas' is released at the same time, containing dozens of maps showing population density, geology, weather, crops, rainfall, storms, taxation, disease, temperature and wealth. Graphical data is also included to show the distribution of blindness, deafness, autism, death, nationality, idiocy and insanity. Amazing.

The 1870 Census documents a quarter of a million business establishments across the country, with specific data for power systems, employees, wages, materials and products, including dollar totals, where appropriate.
